The Warriors’ overtime loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night had one big number: 29 turnovers.
Those 29 turnovers are not only a single-game high at five, not only are they an all-time high in Steve Kerr’s season at three, but the most by a Golden State team. State held in one game since the dark days of the organization, Feb. 2002 against the Denver Nuggets, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Oklahoma City scored 35 of those 29 points, helping them take control of a game the Warriors otherwise dominated. Steph Curry’s 3-pointer over Lu Dort’s head with 18 seconds left should have been a game. But Draymond Green’s foul three to Chet Holmgren from behind the arc, a late second layup cost the Thunder center, and sank three free throws to send the game into overtime.
“I (read) that,” Green told reporters in Oklahoma City. “That’s a mistake a young boy should make, not a 12-year-old man.”
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got the win and the Warriors lost 138-136, moving to 10-12 on the year where coach Steve Kerr kept making mistakes.
“We have won enough championships. I believe that,” Kerr told reporters in Oklahoma City. “But if we’re just going to throw the ball to the other team and continue to be aggressive, then we’re going to lose.”
Like snow tires, no two Hero sales are the same. Some of it was reckless and bad, but against the Thunder, most of it looked like a product of the offense. The Thunder’s long and fast team was on the Warriors’ favorite lane, hampering the cut and cross court.
Cory Joseph was the only Warrior without a hit and eight of the 10 Warriors saw at least one shutout. Andrew Wiggins had six, Klay Thompson and Green each had four – the latter two mostly converting passes intercepted by the Thunder’s defense.
With that, the Warriors dropped their fifth road game, not winning at home since November 6 against the Detroit Pistons. They are also 0-2 in overtime games, all against the Thunder. In the first against the OT loss, Kerr decided against the damage of the three and Holmgren hit the game 3 in the last second of regulation.
On Friday, Curry finished with a team-high 34 points on 10-of-20 from the field and 6-of-12 from 3. Jonathan Kuminga played 29 minutes from bench and played almost the entire fourth quarter and most of overtime until. he spoiled old. He had 24 points and 12 rebounds. Klay Thompson was strong on the night, 8-for-15 and 4-for-9 from 3 and 22 points.
Chris Paul, known to have a limited rotation, missed Friday’s game with an undisclosed illness. The Warriors travel to Phoenix where they will face old friend Kevin Durant and the Suns on Tuesday. They then face the Clippers for the third time in two weeks on Thursday in Los Angeles.
