The US Coast Guard seized drug-smuggling vessels in the Atlantic Ocean last month, officials said.
On Wednesday, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Waesche removed 18,219 pounds of cocaine, which has an estimated street value of $239 million.
The drugs were recovered by two U.S. Coast Guard vessels in six separate incidents off the coast of Mexico and Central and South America in November, the Coast Guard said in a statement. news.
The seizure ranged from 44 pounds of cocaine to more than 5,500 pounds taken from a self-propelled semi-submersible on Nov. 20.
Semi-submersibles – also known as “narco subs” – like the one captured are used to evade detection by the coast guard and other authorities. They don’t go completely underwater, and in the last three decades, a withheld number in the Atlantic Ocean to the US or Europe.
The incident of November 20 is the first in the Eastern Pacific since 2020, which Captain Robert Mohr, the commander of the Waesche, said is a remarkable situation.
“I’m very impressed with the crew’s dedication to this incredible tour,” Mohr said in a statement. “They overcame many challenges with hard work, intelligence, and good character to stop us from going after these cartels and their dangerous drugs.”
