The Texas shooting suspect has ‘little’ connection to Austin, sources say

AUSTIN (KXAN) – A court document obtained by KXAN details one of the incidents in a series of violent incidents in Austin on Tuesday. The document also revealed that the suspect had “little involvement in the Austin area.”

The suspect was identified by the Austin Police Department as Shane James, 34. Travis County Jail records show he checked into the jail at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. and charged with mass murder. James is scheduled to appear in court on January 18, according to court records.


Police responded at 6:49 pm Tuesday to a burglary call in the 5300 block of Austral Loop, which is in southwest Austin. According to an affidavit, the caller reported that he was “watching a live feed of his surveillance device” and saw a man aggressively attacking his wife in her home. and his special needs daughter at that time.

When the police arrived they saw the suspect inside the house and trying to escape out the back of the house, said the witness. That’s when James shot a police officer and the officer was hit several times. According to APD, the officer fired back but did not hit the accused.

Interim APD Chief Robin Henderson said the officer is in stable condition. In addition, the police said that the policeman was released from the hospital and recovered from his injuries. As the investigation involved a police officer in the incident, the police announced that more information would be released within 10 business days. according to APD rules.

Police found two victims inside the house, and pronounced them dead at the scene. APD identified the two victims as Katherine Short, 56, and Lauren Short, 30. Life-saving measures were administered but were unsuccessful, the affidavit states.

According to the affidavit, James stole a car from the garage of the home on Austral Loop and drove away.

Police pursued the suspect until he crashed at the intersection of State Highway 45 and FM 1826. Witnesses said during the chase, speeds reached 90 mph before the crash. James hit another car. KXAN has reached out to multiple agencies for details surrounding the crash but we have not received a crash report.

Police took James into custody and found a gunshot wound to his waist, the statement said.

The affidavit says that after identifying James, “it was found that he had little involvement in the Austin, Texas area.”

James had an address in San Antonio, and APD asked the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office to check the home for any injuries, according to the statement.

BCSO went to the home and found two people “deceased with obvious injuries to their bodies,” the statement said. BCSO later identified James’ parents.

Shane is connected to several murders and serious attacks in Austin and Bexar County Tuesday, December 5. The statement said that documents charging Shane with other crimes will be presented in separate reports.
