A winter storm was expected to bring high winds and snow to much of Southcentral Alaska beginning Sunday afternoon, including anchor and the Matanuska Valley. Heavy snow was expected elsewhere, including the Kenai Peninsula, in Southwest Alaska and the Copper River region, and a avalanche warning it worked for the mountains from Girdwood to Seward.

“The trip will be difficult,” the weather service wrote. “Areas of blowing snow can reduce visibility.”
Elsewhere:
• A winter storm warning is in effect for Girdwood and Portage area starting at noon. “Snow totals are 15 to 30 inches, with local amounts of up to 36 inches possible,” the weather service said. “Easterly winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour, strongest through Portage Valley.” Traffic on Seward Highway will be affected. In terms of sea conditions, there is a chance of snow mixed with rain early Monday morning.
• A hurricane warning is in effect part of the Kenai Peninsula and west of Prince William Sound, with between 15 and 30 inches of snow is possible, the weather service said, along with blowing snow. The highest numbers are expected in Turnagain Pass and the Whittier area. The warning also affects Seward and Moose Pass.
“The trip will be difficult,” the weather service wrote. “Heavy snowfall and blowing snow will lead to whiteout conditions at times.”
• Se avalanche warning it works for the mountains from Girdwood to Seward.
“Heavy snow and strong winds will create many areas of unstable snow,” the weather service wrote. “It appears to be both man-made and natural disasters.” The weather service described the conditions as “extremely dangerous.”
• There is also a recommendation for the west of the Kenai Peninsulaincluding Cooper Landing, Kenai/Soldotna and Homer, with 4-8 inches of snow expected and gusts to 40 mph.
• A hurricane warning is in effect the Bristol Bay region and heavy snow and wind.
• A hurricane warning is in effect the Copper River region from late sunday night to monday afternoon, up to 30 inches of snow and gusts to 35 mph.
• An advisory is in effect until Monday evening Susitna Valley, including Talkeetna and Willow. Heavy snow and gusts are possible from Broad Pass north of Talkeetna. North winds, up to 40 mph, will be concentrated along the Parks Highway north of Talkeetna.
