‘The Masked Singer’ Recap: Anteater, Candelabra Revealed

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 12 of “The Masked Singer,” “Soundtrack to My Life,” which aired December 13 on Fox.

Oh, wow, here he comes. Watch out boy, he’s gonna chew you up! Oh, wow, here he comes. John Oates is an Anteater.

He said it wasn’t like that. John Oates, one half of the most successful rock duo of all time – Daryl Hall & John Oates – appeared on Wednesday as Anteater on “The Masked Singer.” Later, Keyshia Cole also released Candelabra.

Oates’ appearance comes at an unexpected time: He and Hall have been in the news recently after the fallout (and Hall’s lawsuit) over Oates’ plan to sell his share of the sun. their business together.

“I can’t talk about it,” Oates told Variety last week. “I really don’t want to talk about it. This is not why I am here. I want to focus on music and (‘The Masked Singer’). Things will work out and time will tell.”

Okay, we got it, can’t go for that. Now, let’s talk about “The Masked Singer” – dressing Oates as an “Anteater” is definitely a nod to the famous Hall & Oates song “Maneater.” However, that clear example eluded the show’s presenters.

“They fell down and tied my hands behind my back and said I was going to be an Anteater,” Oates quipped. “To be honest with you, when I saw the award, I wasn’t too worried about it. But I just went with the flow. Then I realized Anteater/Maneater. It’s nice that no one else was picked up on the show. At least they didn’t talk about it.”

For Anteater, no one was right. Nicole Scherzinger thought it was John Mellencamp, while Robin Thicke named it Jackson Browne. Ken Jeong chose Billy Joel. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg guessed Steven Van Zandt.

“I liked the comparisons they made,” Oates said. “I really liked the fact that they compared me to some of my favorite singers. People like Mellencamp and Billy Joel, Bryan Adams, Bob Seger. They seemed to have a lot of fun. in my voice acting.”

Oates said he agreed to do “The Masked Singer” when he realized there was an opportunity to perform without a Hall & Oates show from the audience. “Separating myself from the image of who I am in Hall & Oates, the 80s, the pop hits, all that kind of stuff. What would happen if I just sang?” he said. “What was the response going to be? That moved me and I wanted to do it especially for that reason. And besides, I knew it was a big deal. It’s a successful show. I’m doing a lot of charity work and things like that for some big organizations. And I thought, if I can get the word out, I can reach a lot of people. “

But Oates still said he didn’t imagine how difficult it would be to make that outfit. “Singing and acting in that crazy suit was really hard,” he said. “The Men in Black lead you down a dark back alley where you can’t see anything. And they put you on stage and there are strobe lights and confetti falling and your video flashing. People are crazy and screaming, the audience is crazy. I’m currently wearing size 15 shoes that are supposed to hold my feet. It’s definitely a challenge.”

As for being voted off the show, Oates admitted she was disappointed – and blamed jet lag for her final performance. “It was a good experience until the end,” he said. “When I got the last one, I was booked to do a one-off show at the Newport Folk Festival. I did a set and then I rushed to the airport and took it to redye. I went to LA, I had to I got up early in the morning to go straight to the television studio to do Masked Singer. And so, I was very tired.”

As for Candelabra, Nicole Scherzinger got it right by naming it Keyshia Cole, and Robin Thicke named it Cole. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg said that Brandy and Ken Jeong were with Kelly Rowland.

“They let me choose, as much as they could, the songs I would sing,” Bach said. “What made me happy was that I did Elton John, “Magic” by Pilot and Lady Gaga.
