Minnie Driver is not good will for Matt Damon at the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony.
It’s been more than twenty years since the couple divorced, but the actress is opening up about the damage she felt after their relationship ended.
Damon and Driver, 53, began dating in 1997 after they starred in the movie “Good Will Hunting,” which starred Ben Affleck and Robin Williams.
The excuse was short-lived and ended shortly after the 1998 Oscars, where the film received nine nominations.
Damon and Affleck took home the golden statue for Best Original Screenplay, but during their acceptance speech, the cameras caught Driver not happy.
After a throwaway photo of Driver’s dark face while sitting in the audience went viral on Movie Shmood Instagram account, the actress responded in the comments section after one fan said “Minnie looks sad.”
“My face 😂😂😂😂❤️,” he wrote in a photo taken and shared by Comment By Celebrs page.
“Matt ended our relationship a few weeks before, and he was at the Oscars with his new girlfriend… I was very sad,” said Driver. “I wish I could celebrate more because it was an amazing time for all of us, and for this beautiful film!”
Damon famously talked about his breakup with Driver on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
“Well, I’m single,” Damon said on national television. “Minnie and I were together for a while, but we are no longer romantic. We’re just good friends, and I love him so much … I care about him so much. We care about each other a lot. It wasn’t planned, you know? And if it’s not the thing to do, then it’s not the thing.
In July of the same year, Driver revealed in an interview with the Los Angeles Times he was disappointed that “Oppenheimer” was widely reported in the news.
“It’s sad that March went on Oprah; it seemed like good publicity for him to let the world know that we were no longer together, which I found very inappropriate,” she said. “Yes, he was busy expressing his love for me on David Letterman last month.”
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight It was only last year that the actress reflected on the breakup and explained how difficult it was to be someone who caused “pain” in her life.
“I don’t care who you are, that hurts and it’s like a weird dream.” The driver explained. “It’s very difficult, because it wasn’t planned, he can’t help the popularity of him and the way his life was reshaped, in the same way that my life was.”
The “Rosaline” actress added, “It’s funny now, when I think about walking down the aisle in my supermarket at midnight with my best friend, I was like, ‘You see this? This is very different.’ My friend Alexandra was like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe this is happening, like, I feel like we’re in a movie. I’m going to watch this whole movie, even though I know it breaks your heart, it’s so different.’”
Despite the drama, all actors have happily moved on from the breakup.
The “Jason Bourne” actor married Luciana Barroso in 2005 and the couple has three daughters: Isabella, 17, Gia, 14, and Stella, 12 and stepdaughter Alexia Barroso, 24.
The driver was in a committed relationship with actor Addison O’Dea and is mother to son Henry, 14, with ex Timothy J. Lea.
