Interested in getting your hands on the next Linux Mint release? You can, because the beta build is now available for download.
Linux Mint 21.3 beta is not production ready in theory you don’t have to install this as your main OS. However, chances are some of you will do that and, since this beta is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, which is an older platform, and the stable Linux Mint 21.3 release should be done in a few weeks…
This is the 3rd major update in the Linux Mint 21.x series, following the Linux Mint 21.2 release back in the summer.
As updates go, this is a nice one. It includes some head-scratching new features, including Wayland support in Cinnamon, as well as a few small, thoughtful touches that make for a more familiar experience on a Linux desktop.
Below is an overview of the new features in Cinnamon 6.0, the desktop version of Linux Mint 21.3 (MATE and Xfce versions are also available for download but do not include these changes):
- New cinnamon spice: ‘Movement’ for the Nemo file format series
- Wayland model supported on Cinnamon 6.0 desktop
- Option for 75% scaling added
- Buttons can be disabled
- Ability to choose which monitor to use for information
- Just uploaded to the new site
- The audio applet supports the middle click operation
- New wallpaper
Elsewhere:
- Hypnotix it now supports standard, optimized, yt-dlp updates
- Warpinator allows you to manually connect to a device (IP or QR code)
- Hold on dbus commands are now supported
- A lot These images are displayed, support drag and drop
- Pix automatically rotate videos (if needed)
- Mint Backup displays use a head bar
- Added color palette to Xapp XDG Desktop Portal
- Slick Greeter login box is now customizable
Many minor bug fixes, improvements, and performance tweaks (naturally) ship as part of this update as well, but outside, the list above represents the main new features in Linux Mint 21.3 (so you’re better. maybe notice, like, or benefit from it).

Linux Mint 21.3 is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and uses the Linux 5.15 kernel. It is supported until 2027.
This beta release is intended for testing purposes, but if you install it you can “upgrade” to the final, stable version of Linux Mint 21.3 by installing updates when they become available between now and the time.
Likewise, when the final release comes out those using Linux Mint 21.1 and 21.2 will be able to upgrade to Linux Mint 21.3.
