Good outlook for Geminids this week

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – It’s time for one of the most important rains of the year! Get ready to watch the skies Wednesday night into early Thursday (December 13/14)

This is when the Geminid Meteor Shower reaches its peak. Most meteors per hour are expected to be visible away from city lights. The best time to view the meteors will be from midnight to 2 AM Thursday.

The good news is that the viewing angle is excellent! Clear skies are expected and there is even better news for the Geminids this year. The peak of the rain falls in line with the phase of the new moon this year, which means that the sky will be dark at this time. This should allow for better long-distance visibility from city lights.

Enjoy one of the most popular meteor showers this week!

Remember, it usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes to adjust your eyes to the dark sky in the countryside. You also want to be patient, because the number of meteors per hour is a standard rate. This means that the meteors you encounter and shoot in the sky can happen all at once or spread over several hours.

Meteor showers are rare because they come from an asteroid rather than a comet. The bright side, or the part of the sky where the meteors leave, is also high in the sky at sunset, making it possible to see meteors first.

Make sure you bundle up if you’re out looking for boats, as temperatures will drop into the 20s Wednesday night. See the latest forecast information by visiting our WANE 15 Forecast Page. Enjoy finding meteors!
