PARIS — France said on Sunday that one of its ships in the Red Sea was targeted by two drones that came from Yemen. Both were arrested and shot down.

A brief statement from the Ministry of Defense did not say who shot the drones at the French Navy frigate Languedoc on Saturday night.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have vowed to target ships operating in the Red Sea. The Houthis are Israel’s staunch enemies. They say a series of coastal attacks since the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas mercenaries has prompted their latest and deadliest war.

The French Ministry of Defense said the drones “came directly” to the Languedoc two hours away from the Yemeni side. The warship destroyed all of them about 110 kilometers (70 miles) from the Red Sea city of Al Hudaydah on the Yemeni coast, it said.

The statement did not say what weapon Languedoc used to destroy the drones. The ship is on a French Navy mission in the Red Sea.
