After nine years in power, Donald Tusk is back – securing the support of the Polish parliament on Monday evening to lead a new government.
The election was 248 to support and 201 against, cementing his return almost two months after the coalition of opposition parties led by the former president of the Council of Europe delivered a surprise victory in the national elections on October 15.
“I want to thank the Polish people,” Tusk told cheering politicians. “Thank you Poland, this is a great day, not for me, but for all those who believed deeply for these long years that it will be better, we will drive away the darkness, drive away the evil.”
At the beginning of Monday, the Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki resigned lost a vote of confidence 266-190 in the lower house of the parliament, officially ended the eight-year rule of the Nationalist Law and Justice (PiS).
That paves the way for Tusk to form a centrist, pro-EU government from his Civic Coalition, the liberal Poland 2050 party, the agrarian Polish People’s Party and the Left Party.
Tusk is ready to present his Cabinet in front of Parliament and lay out his management program on Tuesday morning, after which the election of MPs will be held. The office of President Andrzej Duda said that he will prepare to swear in the new government on Wednesday morning.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulations Tusk on Monday evening.
“Your experience and strong commitment to our European values will be important in building a strong Europe, for the benefit of the Polish people,” he said on X. ” I look forward to working with you, starting with this week’s important EUCO.”
