Derek Hough’s wife, Hayley Erbert, was caught emergency brain surgery after a cranial hematoma, Hough revealed in a Thursday Instagram post.

Erbert fainted after Wednesday night’s performance for the couple’s Symphony of Dance tour and was hospitalized in Washington, DC, Hough said.

“She had a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy,” said the professional dancer and “Dancing With the Stars” judge. “He is in stable condition.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, an intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood inside the skull, which is usually caused by a blood vessel bursting in the brain. Trauma such as a fall or a car accident can cause an intracranial hematoma. The condition can be life-threatening and often requires immediate treatment, the Mayo Clinic said.

During a craniectomy, a portion of the skull is removed to relieve pressure on the brain, according to the University of Rochester Medical Center. The procedure is usually performed when a patient has a “severe brain injury that involves excessive bleeding in the brain or severe brain swelling.”

Hough did not comment on how Erbert may have been injured. Last year, Erbert and Hough went through what Erbert described as “a scary car accident on the hills.” He said he “walked away, his face swollen, with four stitches above my eye.”

“I declare that 2023 is a year of health and strength. No more injuries,” Written by Erbert after injury 2022.

Xochitl Gomez, who won the latest season of “Dancing With the Stars” earlier this week, sent her condolences to Erbert on Thursday.

“My best wishes and best wishes to Hayley,” Gomez wrote in an Instagram post. “He was a shining light.”

Hough and Erbert got married in late August and began dating about a month later.
