The Harvard Corporation and Board of Overseers — the University’s governing body — convened on campus Sunday for a regular meeting that comes five days after growing calls for President Claudine Gay to resign. after his testimony in the meeting, according to a source close to the administration. .
In a break between board meetings, Harvard Corporation senior fellow Penny S. Pritzker ’81 did not respond to The Crimson’s repeated questions about whether she would ask Gay to resign, should it come to that. reporter on Sunday afternoon.
Pritzker, who was on campus for a board meeting, ignored the questions as he and Shirley M. Tilghman – another member of the Foundation – entered a car.
While the meeting of the Corporation and the Board of Directors are following their regular schedule, the situation facing the meeting is not unique.
During a hearing before the House Committee on Education and Human Services, Gay — along with witnesses University of Pennsylvania President Elizabeth Magill and MIT President Sally A. Kornbluth — refused to answer directly. to a question from Rep. Elise M. Stefanik ’06 (RN). .Y.) about whether the call for the genocide of the Jews violated Harvard’s rules on coercion and harassment.
The deal with Stefanik was publicized, and Magill resigned on Saturday amid backlash and pressure from UPenn’s board of trustees.
Gay, who has previously faced several isolated calls to resign from the presidency, has come under heavy pressure to resign. On Friday, more than 70 members of Congress – including two Democrats – signed a letter to the Harvard administration calling on Gay to resign.
The board is expected to discuss the response to Gay’s testimony and decide whether to issue a public statement in support of it. the president they elected to lead Harvard less than a year ago.
Although the Foundation is silent about the future of Gay’s tenure, an increasing number of Harvard faculty members have spoken out to express support for Gay.
