The deal is in trouble again.
In the latest episode of his podcast, Let’s Understand, Shannen Doherty welcomed her first man Encouragement costar Holly Marie Combs talks about their long friendship and their time together on the WB series. Even the two got into some detailed information about the popularity behind the scenes on the show, which prompted Doherty’s departure after season 3.
In season 2, Doherty said Alyssa Milano and her mother tried to separate Combs from Doherty. “It’s funny how he tried to pull you away from me,” he said. Combs and Doherty were close friends before they met Great, with Combs even living with Doherty after her split from ex-husband Bryan Travis Smith.
Season 2 brought more challenges for the main trio. Doherty was dealing with her father’s illness, which was “in and out of the hospital non-stop” at the same time Combs was dealing with her own health scare, which required surgery to removed a potentially cancerous tumor from his stomach.
Struggling with her own pain accompanying her father in the hospital, Doherty summoned the strength to visit Combs after his surgery, which caused her to take time off from filming season 2. But Doherty said Milano and her mother would not allow anyone to visit Combs.
“Hospitals scared me to death. I waited 24 hours after the operation to go but it was not easy for me to enter. “Alyssa and her mother blocked people from seeing you and at the time you didn’t know it. I remember you texting me, ‘Man are you coming to see me?'”
Doherty was devastated to receive Combs’ message and felt guilty that Combs thought Doherty had abandoned him. “I also felt angry at the point of not being allowed to come see you and how some kind of family would come,” Doherty added. “(It) caused a weird rift between the two of us that continued into season 2. I think I cried every night.”
Combs acknowledged that his own childhood led him to seek refuge with the Milano family when they took him in. A family came forward and tried to adopt me, which was a scam for me,” Combs said. “I also wanted everyone to be okay, I wanted the show to be successful. There are no angels, there are no demons. There were bad days, there were good days. We could have behaved better in some cases but there was a lack of understanding of the bigger picture.
Over the years, rumors of a back row conflict swirled, especially after Doherty left Encouragement and said that his people did not work as hard as he did. “I want to work with filmmakers who really care and want to be there every day,” Doherty said. Entertainment Tonight. “I don’t want to work with people who make fun of their work and criticize it and say they hate it or whatever.”
In the years since then, there have been various improvements. Combs and Doherty remain close friends, even costarring a travel reality show From the Map with Shannen & Holly in 2015. Back in 2017, Milano said she and Doherty had reconciled. In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Milano took control of the ways in which his competition contributed to the problems outside the screen.
“You know, I can be responsible for a lot of the tension we had,” Milano said. Entertainment Tonight. “I think a lot of our struggle came from the feeling that I was in the competition and not the brotherhood that the show was so big on. And I have some guilt in my part in that.”
